Interactive Print Advertising Driven By Volkswagen

I'm loving the interaction that is being pushed by combining interactive and traditional maketing.  The latest example that caught my eye came via tweet from Teehan + Lax regarding Volkswagen.

The video below shows how your iPhone, an app and a print ad work together to "test drive" new Volkswagen features right from the ad.

Have you seen other examples of tech and print teaming up to do creative things?

Can A Web Designer's Dream Come True?

It can keep you up at night, literally.  IE 6 is the browser of death and many web designers and developers have spent hours on hacks and work arounds to keep their websites working in this outdated browser.

Yeah know it's bad when Microsoft itself is leading the charge to kill IE 6.  They've launched ie6countdown.com to help the cause.

Ie6countdown

As the site states, it've been 10 years now since IE 6 was released, it's time to move on.  It was time to move on 5 years ago!

The graphic and data on the site is an interesting look at the main culprits.  Here in the US, while we're down to 2.9%, it's big corporate that is the main culprit and many of us have them as clients.

Here's to hoping the dream comes true in 2011 and we can focus more time on better things!

2011 Begins Big With A Switch

Little did I know that in reading the phenomenal book “Switch” to end the year, the term and philosophy would so closely apply to my professional life.

I’m excited to announce that I have accepted the role of Vice President with Spyder Trap Online Marketing of Minneapolis.

Spydertraplogo425

Without writing a novel, I have some important ground to cover. First is the respect I have for the incredible company, partners, staff and clients I leave behind at Five Technology.

These people individually and collectively have helped make me successful from many aspects. In helping launch Five 3 years ago until now, I have developed my skill set and talents, further than in any other timeframe of my career. It’s without a doubt Five’s level of web work will continue to rise without me. I’m truly thankful for the last 3 years.

My new position with Spyder Trap is an amazing new adventure to help build on the budding agency that President Mike Rynchek created.  When analyzing this decision (not sleeping for 2 weeks), it became clear to me that joining the team, talent and culture at Spyder Trap was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

I’m excited to bring my web design, web development, e-commerce and search marketing expertise to the team and Spyder Trap’s clients.  This move also allows me to further my specific interests in mobile, apps and social media to name a few.   My passion for working with businesses and organizations to market, engage and succeed has never been higher.

While I bring experience and leadership to the team, I am equally excited to learn as much as I teach and share.  It’s why I love this profession; I learn and develop every day.

I also have to thank the numerous industry and social media connections I have formed.  If you are reading this, you have definitely contributed to my growth. Thank you.

I’m ecstatic to roll up my sleeves and get to work with the Spyder Trap crew starting January 10th, 2011 and create great things online.   Let the fun begin.

Google Chrome OS - Living On The Web

A bit of buzz is building for Google taking their stab at an OS.  Chrome OS promises to offer an experience built and custimozed for those of us that live on the web.

Google is taking applications for those that want to test drive their OS on netbooks provided by them.  Of course I applied and also took a fun little quiz they offered on if you "Live On The Web". I'm not 100%, but darn close.

Just maybe I'll get lucky. You can apply too.

Thank You Veterans, Especially The Two I Know Best

Sincere thanks and appreciation to our Veterans that have and do serve our country.  My freedom, my family's safety and all that you sacrifice is not taken for granted.

I have two people that I think of today the most.  The first is my dad, who passed 11 years ago at the young age of 52.  I appreciate his service as well as all of his stories from his Air Force days. I smile everytime I see his young, proud mug on this picture.

The second is my friend and Five Technology web programmer Travis Neiderhiser.  Travis was deployed to Afghanistan   for a 400 day tour this summer.  While we keep programming without him, we appreciate the sacrifice he is making as well as his wife and two children.

Again, thank you Veterans.

Mobile Search ... Quick, Quick, Quick With Google Instant Search

Google's Instant Search is ready for your mobile device and it's likely the best place for it.  Searching on your phone usually means you want to type little and get results fast.

Google is making a beta version available to most iPhone and Android devices in the U.S. now via your mobile web browser.

Mobile search improvements and local search changes from Google are adding up fast these days.

Local Search Landscape Is Changing

Google is changing the way local search results are displayed for users and that change isn't a small one.  Many have been waiting for the shift as Google has been working hard to strengthen their Google Places offering in 2010.

Media_httpwwwfivetech_ynkcp

In looking at the changes and digesting the numerous experts blogging on their take, it's a move I both like and dislike (shocking right?).  I like the fact that it puts more emphasis on local search in general, people are taking note and it's a buzz topic for the time being. Local is not stale, it's growing at a feverish pace.

I dislike the results being more a mash-up of organic and local with a local map results sandwiched in the middle of organic results.  I think it will confuse a user to some extent, I liked the old separation, but I'm sure more movement is coming though.  I might soften over time though too. :)

You'll notice the results from the Google Place pages are aimed to bring more of their information to the forefront.  Reviews, review sources and a photo now can accompany the search result displayed.  Your local listing, data and result is more important than ever.

Other posts you should read on the Google Local Search results change:

Combine this local search results change along with tags and Place Search, you see where the focus in search is right now. LOCAL.

Stickers, really cool stickers.

I'm excited about stickers.

I put in an order today with Sticker Mule for Five Technology logo stickers and also iPhone covers.  The proofs rock, so I can't wait to get the sticky version.

Sticker Mule also offers many more types of custom stickers and covers, even the iPad is in play.  You can also follow them on Twitter too, @stickermule.  I can't wait to post photos of the stickers when they arrive (via FREE shipping!).

A Look At New Twitter, My List Of Likes & A Screenshot

On Monday this week I saw the message letting me know I had "New Twitter". Flipped the switch.

I was looking forward to what I had seen and heard from others.  I'm a power user of the browser version, mostly because I'm in a browser all day long.  I know most prefer Tweetdeck or other apps, I tried Tweetdeck for a few months. I went back to the web interface, it has always worked for me.

New Twitter things I like so far:

  • Tabbed mentions, RTs, Saved searches for easy toggling
  • Easy previews of users
  • Photos & videos tied in
  • More info above the fold
  • Latest Favorite showing - I use the Fav feature a lot
  • Larger suggestions of peeps to follow

Sure, I have a few more features I'd like to see, but it's a big step forward.  The interface feels solid to me and I've taken to it quickly.  What are your thoughts?

Logo Design Colors Of The Top 100 Web Brands

If you're going to put together a sweet infographic on design, then I'm going to think it rocks and I'm going to link to it.  Colour Lovers did just that on their blog in looking at the colors used by the top 100 web brands.

You can view the full infographic here

Not suprisingly, blue and red are the dominant colors at work here.  Hope you like it.
